It's been several years since I posted about Layneau, the luxury lingerie line founded by Kaaren Bedi. But the moment I saw the Layneau Millefeuille collection, I knew I had to share it with readers. And while many of us can't afford some of these pieces, they are treasures to adore (and save up for).
The last time I saw Kaaren was a few years ago while on my second book tour. Somethings have changed. First, she just got married--at the age of 54. So she's traveling more, both for her own and her husband's business. Second, Layneau now has a showroom in Paris. And while the brand continues to evolve, the vision of its creator has not. It's always been a safe space for women of a certain age, those of us looking for some sensual dignity in our lingerie. We're done with complicated hooks and strappy sets--because although pretty and sexy, our needs are different.
One of the reasons I connect to this brand so well is that Kaaren launched it only seven years ago, in her late 40s. It took her a long time to sort through the typical doubts many women face when pursuing a new passion. You spend the first few years wondering whether it's a business or a hobby. Especially if you're new, as I was, to the creative side of things. Which meant I didn't publish my first book until I was nearly 50.
Kaaren's background in costume design is evident in the current glam old-Hollywood collection. Millefeuille is dripping with drama and decadence. But at the same time, many of the looks could easily be worn as outerwear. The name comes from the French for the floral backgrounds of tapestries. But Millefeuille also applies to a pastry of many layers. It is the perfect metaphor for a woman; beautiful, intricate, and standing in her power. And both are made from the finest materials.
