Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love any excuse to indulge in chocolates and candy while playing dress-up. And the best part is dreaming up new Halloween costume ideas.
I'm not a fan of store-bought costumes but I'm not a seamstress either. Instead I put a costume together from pieces in my own wardrobe, or find things in thrift stores. Half the fun is giving myself permission to use my imagination. (One year I found a 1950s vintage pink dress and a lime-green, tulle ruffled apron. I stuffed wooden spoons into the pockets, wore a cheap bouffant wig, and went to a party as Betty Crocker.)
This year I'm exploring Halloween costume ideas based on the lingerie trend of longline bras, corsets, basques, bustiers, and waist cinchers. These are easy to pair with skirts or tutus, or wild leggings or pants. Or you can wear them over a long flowing dress or vintage nightgown. Add a fashion or fright wig, the right hat and make-up, some costume jewelry, props (or an eye-patch), and you are instantly transformed into a Maleficent witch, sexy ghoul, or menacing pirate.
Best thing about starting with lingerie as the foundation for your costume? It's something you'll wear again, especially during the Holiday party season. You can add any number of layers over them and still have a smooth torso; or in some cases reduce your waist by a few inches and create greater curves. You can play them up to be super-sexy, or get all spooky. The possibilities are endless.
You can wear these pieces to create a renaissance character. But there's no need to stay in Medieval times. A sequined bustier coupled with a top-hat, cane, and tuxedo jacket can turn you into a modern Broadway or Burlesque star. Add garterbelt, stockings, and a few silky wrist ties, and you, too, can be a character from 50 Shades of Grey. Or discover something entirely new by mixing and matching whatever you find in your own (or a friend's) closet.
Here are a 15 lingerie possibilities to help get your Halloween costume ideas flowing:
Will you wear a costume for Halloween? Do you pull something together from your closet, sew your own, or buy a costume? Would you incorporate any of these lingerie pieces into your outfit?
