As someone who mostly owns loose dresses and skirts, I’ve never really had to worry about visible panty lines.
Then I bought myself a pair of slim-fit jeans. Suddenly briefs that I hadn’t previously noticed dug in a little bit were glaringly apparent under clothing. The jeans seemed to highlight and exaggerate the outline, creating a not-so-flattering lumpy effect. My favorite underthings with their ruffles and 3D embellishments were apparently a no-go.
In my case, I just took to wearing thongs whenever an outfit called for a smooth derrière. But as much as I find thongs comfortable and like the way they look, I know that’s not the case for everyone. Luckily, thanks to the growing popularity of yoga pants and bodycon dresses, there’s an increasing emphasis on ‘no show’ underwear to go along with it.
Often described as seamless, none of these is 100% seam free. However, some are indeed stitch-free thanks to a technique called bonding. Essentially, they’re glued instead of sewn together, which allows for a more discreet seam. Others rely on a type of seam called a ‘butted flatlock’ in which the two pieces of fabric don’t overlap, to be as flat as possible.
Some are edged with soft, stretchy lace or laser-cut, non-fray jersey, to eliminate the need for waist and leg-line seams. Still, others achieve the same effect by folding the fabric in half and using the fold-line as a seam- and elastic-free hemline.
Unfortunately, one thing that seamless briefs do seem to have in common is looking rather basic. Plain and beige are predominantly what’s available. Just because you don’t want your underwear showing through clothing, doesn’t mean you don’t want it to look cute when it is on display. So I’ve scoured the internet to put together this list of seamless and no-VPL briefs that are a little more interesting than most.
There are some simpler designs included because of their premium fabrics, but mostly I looked for fun colors, lace details, and eye-catching prints. If it’s the latter you’re after, be sure to check out the rest of Pretty Leafer’s handmade line. Or, if you don’t mind thongs, seamless-specialist Commando is known for their range of quirky prints too.
