Half slips were once a staple undergarment. But today, most people don’t wear them, and most lingerie brands don’t even make them. It’s a shame because they are fantastic for so many reasons!
Even if you don’t care about wearing beautiful lingerie, half slips can make your outerwear look better. As the article title suggests, they’re the perfect solution to a skirt or dress that’s just a bit too see-thru, especially in the bright summer sunshine. My slips are essential to me for just this reason.
Slips also prevent skirts and dresses from getting caught between your legs when walking. And stop tighter styles from riding up. They’re smoothing too. Not in a shapewear kind of way. But a slip can effectively hide VPL, for example.
Some styles, sold as ‘skirt extenders,’ are even designed to be seen. They tend to be a little longer and with a decorative hemline. It pokes out from under your outfit, adding a few inches of modesty attractively.
And it’s not just aesthetics. A slip creates a barrier layer between you and your clothing. Your outerwear stays cleaner for longer, and won’t require washing so often.
Full slips, at least, have made something of a recent comeback. Often called chemises, these resemble thin-strapped dresses. But if you are looking for a half slip, you may have a hard time. Sometimes called waist slips, these are the skirt part only. And they’re much rarer.
Half slips range from mid-thigh to ankle length. Because of their design as practical garments, you’ll find that a number of the styles below come in a choice of lengths. So whatever height you are or whatever hemline lengths you like to wear, you should be able to find something suitable.
Unfortunately, being practical-focussed, they can also be a bit boring. The vast majority are black, white or beige. But I’ve searched hard to find all the stylish ones too! There’s everything here from simple basics to colorful silk and lace skirt slips.
