Stylish and Sporty Swimwear for the Athletic Fashionista

  |   By Estelle Puleston

Recently, I decided to start teaching my son how to swim. Aside from the odd splash in the water on holiday, it was the first time I’d been in a pool myself since my childhood swimming lessons. I dug my swimwear out of storage, a pile of little triangle cups and tie-sided bikinis that I’d picked out more with sunbathing in mind than anything else. “Whatever,” I thought, “it’s swimwear, it’ll do.”

At the pool though, I found myself continually rearranging my bikini. I couldn’t help but notice that everyone else was wearing something much more practical. I was the only one glancing down every five minutes to check that my boobs were still inside their cups. It was time, it seemed, for me to invest in some proper sports swimwear.

Back home, I quickly realized that most swimwear brands expect you to choose between function and fashion. Pretty swimsuits were easy to find. So were overtly sporty ones---simple shapes in plain, block colors with perhaps a stripe for decoration. But something in-between? Not so much.

I was looking for a swimsuit or bikini design that was practical but still fashion-forward. Something sporty yet eye-catching and unique. As for functionality, I wanted thick straps for support and to help it stay in place. Other requirements were a modest neckline, and no extraneous straps or dangling decorations that might get in the way when moving about.

It was a long search, but I eventually came across some swimwear brands making what I want. And lucky you, I’ve rounded them all up here. Today’s list is full of chic, practical and sporty swimwear that you can wear to swim, surf or enjoy a game of beach volleyball. Yes, you can be comfortable and active without sacrificing style.
